Tightlines is a new angling project aimed at getting people hooked on fishing around London's canals. It will also demonstrate why it is so important to keep our canals clean.

With funding from the Environment Agency, environmenntal charity Thames 21 has launched the project. Grant Fear from Thames 21 says: "We're giving local people the chance to learn to fish with a fully qualified instructor. We'll be giving them tuition, coaching, equipment and advice. Tightlines will mean people gain new skills and confidence as well as access to often ignored, but beautiful water spaces in the heart of London".

Alan Butterworth from the Environment Agency adds: "Angling is a fantastic way of to get people using and enjoying their local fisheries. We're really pleased to be supporting Tightlines".

Environment AgencyThe Environment Agency carries out fish surveys each year on rivers across the country. These surveys not only show the health of our fish populations, but also act as a way of indicating the health of our rivers. Last year over 2000 surveys were completed on rivers in and around the Thames region, and a lot of fish were caught.

On the main river between Hurley and Teddington, two weeks of surveying caught 7,000 fish including 21 different species. Fisheries officer Mike Hill says "we're really pleased with the result. They show an upward trend and demonstrate the large number and diversity of fish in the Thames".

Bury Hill FisheriesA much better week weather wise with water temperatures building slowly early week with just the odd shower keeping oxygen levels high. However the back end of the week was much dryer with temperatures increasing rapidly to 20 degree’s plus by the weekend, which is what we need but not quite so quickly! The fishing has continued on from last weeks amazing catches with yet more 100lb bags reported from all lakes this week together with four thirty pound carp reported from both Temple and the Old lake.

With water temperatures now starting to increase, all lakes are seeing some excellent sport particularly from the tench, which are now starting to show on both the Old lake and Milton lake. However with water temperatures still 4 or 5 degree’s below average it is the bream which continue to dominate sport on the old lake with plenty of bags to 100lb+ reported again this week supported by roach, rudd and the odd tench. Bonds lake has continued to fish incredibly well this week with plenty of ton up bags reported yet again together a winning match weight last Sunday close to 300lb. Milton lake is also seeing some excellent catches with crucian and tench sport picking up with bags to just under 100lb supported by some excellent roach, rudd and perch which have been caught to 2lb 8oz.

The carp fishing on both Temple and the Old lake has also been frantic these past few days with Temple producing a further 10 fish this weekend alone which included two thirties. Not to be outdone, the old lake has also fished very well this past week with a dozen or so twenties reported and two thirties! Outlook for the week ahead is higher temperatures with the chance of the odd shower, so perfect conditions for fishing.
