30.06.05 - WHERE'S FISHING WELL [JUNE 05]

The following is a round up of coarse fishing venues [all featured on Fish South East] that are fishing well at the moment and how to catch at each venue. Click on the link for more details of each fishery.

Farlows Lake [Buckinghamshire]
A recent event on the match lake was on with 61lb of bream and tench from peg 27 using open-ended feeder with pellet. Behind the pylon and fence, swims are producing silverfish bags to 35lb, using waggler and feeder at 30yds with corn, red maggot and worm being the favoured hook baits. Fishing is still slow on the main lake although tench and carp can still be caught using an open-ended feeder with breadflake, meat, and red worm doing well.

Rayne Lodge [Essex]
Ledgered baits cast to the islands on all three lakes are taking carp to 15lb on the top lake, 13lb on the middle lake and 18lb on the bottom lake. Nets to 100lb are achievable. Peg 17 on the top lake recently produced 146lb of mostly carp on the pole using pellet whilst the middle lake has been in form on the short pole or light leger in the margins using soft pellets. Mixed bags of crucians, skimmers and tench exceeding 100lb have been reprted on the bottom lake using similar tactics.

Stanborough Lake [Hertfordshire]
Bream fishing on the lake has been slow but fish are now showing in the 5-6lb range. Plenty of skimmers and bream in the 2-3lb mark have been reported with nets to 50lb not uncommon. Pole, waggler or groundbait feeder with maggot, caster, and pellet baits have all worked well. Carp to 18lb have fallen to in-line method feeder with meat or boilies.

Verulam Angling Club [Hertfordshire]
Smallford Lagoon is produsing some serious tench on both the pole in the margins and a groundbait feeder. Bags to 60lb on corn, maggot and meat baits over a bed of pellets have been reported. Three tench over 8lb have already been caught with commons topping 27lb.
Frogmore Match Lake is producing bags to 80lb. Tony's Lake is doing well in only its second season, with tench and perch to 3lb and some excellent rudd bags to feeder and waggler fished maggot and caster.

Hartley Lands Farm [Kent]
The in-line method feeder has been scoring well with meat, corn and maggot. The margins can also be very effective this time of year. The Farm Reservoir is perhaps the best known, not only for its 100lb plus competition weights, but also for perch to 5lb and chub around 4lb 8oz.

Bury Hill Fisheries [Surrey]
A recent match on Bonds Lake was won with 33 carp for a 145lb bag, using feeder and mini-strawberry boilies out to the island. On Milton Lake, try small ledgers out to the lilly pads or waggler in the margins for mixed bags from 30-80lb. Pop ups on the main lake are taking plenty of carp from most parts of the lake. Plenty of tench to 7lb and bream to 6lb are showing around peg 70 with nets to 80lb on small open end feeders using corn or pellets.

Twynersh Fishing Complex [Surrey]
The method feeder is scoring well at the moment, particularly on Pit 1. Baits performing well include hemp, corn, chickpeas and boilies. Any peg on Pit 1 will do well but the hot peg is on the far bank next to the oak tree. Waggler and caster fished half depth, lose feeding maggots is taking roach to 1lb and rudd to 1lb 8oz. Loads of carp from 14lb to 22lb plus the odd big fish to 32lb are showing on Pit 2. Fruit flavoured boilies fished in the margins over carp pellets and corn seem to be doing well. Over on the match lake, groundbait laced with chopped worm is taking perch to 12oz, roach to 14oz and bream to 6lb.

Coarse Fishing News

The world of angling is up in arms after a proposal to bring fisheries law into the 21st century was snubbed by the government for at least another year. The sports governing body, the Fisheries and Angling Conservation Trust said it was disappointed that the Queen's speech did not include any reference to the new fisheries legislation promised four years ago.

The Government's 2000/01 Salmon and Freshwater Fisheries Review had promised to update angling related legislation, a hollow pledge it would now seem. A spokesperson from FACT said legislation on fisheries is long overdue and added this government has been very supportive of angling in the past and we now want that same level of support for our fisheries.

Martin Salter MP [the government's spokesperson for shooting and fishing] admitted that those behind the Fihseries Bill [see News Archive April '05 will have to fight to esnure it finds Parliamentary time. He said it was a blow not to see the Fisheries Bill included in this years speech, but added that we have to be realistic and realise that other more important issues have to come first.

Bury Hill FisheriesTemperatures remain a bit undecided as we continue to see peeks and troughs which have not helped spawning, still following the hot weekend two weeks ago, most of the carp, tench and bream have now spawned which is evident in the recent catches which have picked up. Overall, the weather has become more settled which in turn has helped the fishing, which has been excellent.

All lakes have produced their fair share of action this week with the Old lake fishing exceptionally well, particularly for the bream, which have responded well to fed following spawning with bags to over 200lb being reported. The tench fishing has also picked up as has the carp fishing with a good number of 20lb+ fish reported. Bonds has also fished well this week producing match weights to 150lb+ and pleasure bags to over 200lb, whilst Milton has produced some excellent sport with bags to 150lb reported.

Outlook for the week ahead, is mainly dry with sunny intervals and temperatures sitting around the upper teens which is perfect fishing weather!

Coarse Fishing News

Carpenwater in Essex is a new, heavily stocked 1 acre farm reservoir containing various coarse fish of mixed sizes catering for all anglers. Having been opened several months now, Fish South East thought we should see how things are shaping up.

23 May : A nice suprise for one lucky angler at the weekend with a 6lb 4oz red, black and white Koi. More carp are being caught now that the weather is warming up and they certainly have been eating well by the weight they are putting on!

17 May : As the weather is so up and down at the moment the carp are still only feeding when it has been warm. Fishmeal popups and sweetcorn have taken carp fished close to the reeds or out in the middle on the gravel patch. Loads and loads of Rudd with some to over 1lb and the odd crucian to float fished maggots in the margins. More 3-5lb ghost carp will be stocked soon.

1 May : Float fishing with maggots has been producing loads of rudd with some reaching 1lb. A few ide have been caught whilst fishing for the rudd higher in the water. Carp have been very illusive last few weeks as they seem to be pre occupied feeding on the natural food that has been coming to life in the silt.

For more information on Carpenwater please visit my Venues - Essex page or their website which can be found at http://www.carpenwater.co.uk/index.htm

How does someone this busy manage to find time for fishing at all.
