Coarse Fishing News

Coarse fishing news from Bury Hill FisheriesFollowing the stocking of 400 odd carp into the Old Lake from Claremont, the carp fishing has gone banana's these past couple of days as water temperatures increase. Normally January can be a hard month fishing wise, however for anyone wanting to test out their new christmas presents, the Old Lake is certainly worth a go with day ticket anglers catching up to 6 fish each averaging around the 15lb to 18lb mark with the odd twenty. The island and jungle have been the key areas with all good baits working and especially small white pop ups.

The general fishing is also abnormally good with plenty of bream showing on the Old Lake whilst Bonds and Milton are also producing some silly sport for the time of year. So if you have been thinking of getting out, the next few days are definitely worth a go!

Coarse Fishing News

Overview:
The fishing remains a touch hard whilst water temperatures sit below 5 degree’s, which is generally regarded as the feeding trigger, although fish will feed below this as is demonstrated by the fish caught this week, but not in large numbers. With temperatures due to finally increase over the coming days, we fully expect sport to improve and once water temperatures move beyond the critical 5 degree’s, we are confident that all lakes will respond accordingly!

Coarse fishing news from Bury Hill Fisheries

Old Bury Lake:
Predator fishing - Generally sport has been tough continuing on from the Christmas freeze up, although the few dedicated anglers who have made the effort, have found a few obliging pike and zander, which have generally tended to be smaller fish. Tactics remain much the same as in previous weeks with float and ledger both working on the day with small dead baits, both sea and freshwater working. Whilst roach, trout and lamprey section continue to catch the odd fish, larger sea baits are accounting for a few better fish.

General Fishing: - Another hard week for the few general anglers who braved the freezing conditions, with just small bags being caught from the front bank, although surprisingly this was from the middle section and not the deeper water. The recent stocking of bream, skimmers and roach has certainly helped sport with these smaller fish making up the weights at present, although surprisingly, the odd tench has also been caught. Tactics remain much the same as in previous weeks with float, pole and feeder working on the day, depending on the peg. Baits currently need to be small with single maggot, caster or worm taking fish.

Bonds Lake:
Whilst few anglers have fished bonds this week, those that did make the effort were pleasantly surprised with better than expected sport early week catching a few reasonable fish despite poor conditions. Whilst all methods have been working, the pole and feeder have probably been the best methods with smaller baits such as maggot, caster and worm fished with small hooks being best, although corn did account for a couple of bigger bags.

Milton Lake:
Like Bonds, Milton responded early week to the slight increase in temperature with a few anglers catching small but well deserved bags of roach, rudd and perch along with the odd tench. Small baits are not surprisingly working best with both maggot, caster and worm all working on the day. The fishing will be further enhanced following the stocking of circa 3000 small carp in the next week or so.

Coarse Fishing News

Coarse fishing news from Elphicks FisheryElphicks Fishery is a 7 lake, family-run complex is set in the heart of the Kent countryside in an area of outstanding natural beauty. Purpose built by fishermen for fishermen it is regarded as one of the premier coarse fisheries in the South of England.
Fish South East decided to check out what's been happening at Elphicks recently and how it has been fishing.

2006 Memberships:
There are a limited number of memberships available for 2006, these are adult only and you must first fish North Lake. They will now allow potential members to fish both of these lakes at North Lake rates before committing to the membership. Membership costs £350 for the full year “all in”. Limited number of specimen lake memberships available please phone 01580 212512 for details.

North Lake adult only non-members:
North Lake finished 2005 having produced 64 carp over the magic 30lb mark and well over 400 twenty pound plus fish. The catfish record was broken again and now stands at just over 54lb. At present you have to work hard for your fish as the water temperatures are right down but with perseverance, good water and rig craft, and a little bit of luck you can still score. Some very nice 20lb plus mirrors and commons have been banked in the cold weather, even through the ice proving that it can be done. NB. Minimum tackle requirements: 40” net, 40” unhooking mat, 2.5lb T.C rods and 10lb line per angler, no sharing allowed. Pre-booking 2–3 weeks in advance for 24 hour plus weekend sessions on North Lake is advisable.

Plantation Lake:
You will have to work for your fish but there is nothing mysterious about this lake, keep it simple and concentrate on getting the basics right. Maize and corn continue as the firm favorite baits but with the cooler water try fruity flavoured baits as well. Minimum tackle requirements are a 30” net and an un-hooking mat per angler.

Prairie Lake:
Your presentation has got to be good at this time of year. Try natural baits as well as pellet on smaller hooks to get hold of them, scale all your tackle down as much as you can. The Perch fishing is hotting up again with the colder weather so now is your chance, float fished lob worms in the margins are a good bet.

Sandwich Lake:
Sandwich really comes into its own at this time of year, lots of Bream, Roach, Rudd and still the occasional Tench! Just about every bait works, pellet, corn, worm maggot, caster and bread are the favorites. Chopped worm also works very well. Keep feeding the swim, little and often for best results. Matches are being fished at this time of year so it’s worth a call to check availability on a Wednesday or Sunday.

Kettles Lake:
As with Prairie Lake, Kettles can be hard work when the water temperature is down so scale down your tackle and concentrate on bait presentation. Bites can be very delicate so it pays to watch your rod tip or shot your float down as far as possible, if either so much as twitch, hit them! Just about every kind of bait works in kettles but the favourites have to be, meat, pellet and worm.

Please not there is no longer a snack wagon on site.

Coarse fishing news from The Environment AgencyThe Environment Agency is launching a plan that will define the future of the River Medway. The River Medway Waterway Plan will be unveiled at the London Boat Show on Friday 6 January 2006. The Environment Agency runs the Medway Navigation, which lies between Allington Lock near Maidstone and Tonbridge in Kent. Environment Agency Officers maintain the 31kilometres [19 miles] of river year-round.

The River Medway Waterway Plan includes 45 improvements that the Environment Agency, together with local authorities and local businesses, would like to see happen along the river before 2010. This work will make sure the River Medway is developed and cared for in the future. Plans include building temporary moorings along the river and automating the lock gates at Allington. The Environment Agency has also put plans in place to develop and create habitats on the river and increase public awareness of river wildlife.

The Environment Agency will achieve many of the aims set out in the River Medway Waterway Plan by working in local partnerships.

John Morgan, Kent Waterways Manager at the Environment Agency, said:
"We’re delighted to be unveiling the River Medway Waterway Plan. Thanks to extra government funding over the next three years we are investing more money in our rivers than ever before. With this money we will be able to modernise our waterways by improving the maintenance of them and providing better facilities. This plan provides a blueprint for the future of the River Medway. We hope you will see and feel the benefits of our work next season."

The Environment Agency has developed the River Medway Waterway as part of the navigation strategy, Your Rivers for Life. This was launched in January 2004 and sets out how the Environment Agency will restore, conserve and develop its rivers in line with the needs of modern society over the next 20 years. The River Thames Waterway Plan and The Great Ouse Waterway Plan have also been completed and will be launched at the London Boat Show.
