Bonds lake has also continued to fish well with one lucky angler catching close to 200lb of carp whilst Milton lake is starting to see some excellent crucian and tench sport with bags to 60lb.

The carp fishing on both Temple and the old lake both got off to a flying start with a number of twenties reported from the old lake whilst Temple produced yet another thirty – see catch reports below. Whilst sport has slowed this weekend following the cold snap on Friday, outlook for the week ahead is much better with temperatures due to climb back to the mid teens early week and remaining mainly dry.

Carpenwater is a new, heavily stocked 1 acre farm reservoir containing various coarse fish of mixed sizes to cater for all anglers. Recently opened at the beginning of April this year, Carpenwater has never been fished before.

Bookings are limited to one day a week - this is to keep the fishing as good as possible with no chance of overfishing. The owners feel that fishing is more enjoyable when you know that there will be no other anglers, your favourite swim wont be taken, and the place has not been overfished! Every effort has been made to make carpenwater a first class fishery. Their aim is to provide anglers with a good days fishing, catching quality fish in a natural environment.

As promised last year Labour has produced a new Charter for Angling in consultation with the national representative organisations for the sport and government ministers. The Charter was written and co-ordinated by angling MP Martin Salter who is Labour’s Parliamentary Spokesman for Angling and Shooting.

The document builds on Labour’s 1996 Angler’s Charter and is the result of months of hard work and discussions with government ministers from DEFRA and DCMS. The Charter carries a foreword and personal endorsement from Nature Conservation and Fisheries Minister Ben Bradshaw. It has been widely welcomed by angling organisations who have described the Charter as “the most comprehensive statement on angling ever produced by a political party.”

The Charter covers the following areas: The Benefits of Angling, Angling and the Law, Rod Licences, Regulation and the Close Season, Angling Governance, Competitive Angling, Participation Strategies, Marine Resources and Fisheries, Water, Diffuse Pollution, Water Conservation, Migratory Fish, Exploitation and Drift Netting, Catch and Release inside Catchment Management, Fish Conservation Strategies, Aquaculture, Ofwat – Water Supply and Sewage Treatment, Waterside Access, British Waterways, Canoeing, Planning Guidance, the Removal of Fish, Bass Management Plan and Predation.

Martin Salter MP said:

“I am extremely proud of our new Charter for Angling which, as a keen fisherman myself, has become something of a ‘labour of love’ for me personally. This document is a serious and intelligent study of all the major issues affecting angling and fisheries in Britain. It provides a guide to how a future Labour government will continue to work with anglers and fishery owners to promote and develop angling and to improve the aquatic environment.”

Terry Mansbridge, Chairman of the National Association of Fisheries and Angling Consultatives said:

"This is an excellent document that will be welcomed by anglers of all disciplines everywhere."

news

A bit of a mixed week with the early part of the week seeing a couple of days of heavy rain followed by dryer warmer weather as we head into the weekend. Despite this, water temperatures have continued to increase slightly which in turn has seen the fishing continue to improve with some excellent bags reported from all lakes. The carp fishing has also continued to respond with both Temple and the Old lake both producing some exceptional fish including another thirty, this time from the old lake. Whilst predator fishing has now stopped, the last few days saw a flurry of good catches with pike to over 20lb and zander to 12lb being reported.

Outlook for the week ahead is again mixed with the odd shower forecast and a possible cold snap on Friday, typical April weather. Tactics are now changing as we head into the spring. Whilst smaller baits such as caster, worm and maggot will continue to catch all the time water temperatures remain cold, larger baits such sweet corn, luncheon meat and soft and banded pellet are all worth a go and will start to catch more consistently as water temperatures increase. Bream and silver fish will continue to dominate sport for the early part of the spring, but expect to see better numbers of tench being caught as we head into April, particularly from the shallower pegs and lily swims.

news

The article appearing on Fish South East's news page on 17.2.05 detailed coarse fishing on the Jubilee Channel in Southwest London. Confusion remained however as to exactly where anglers are allowed to fish. Thankfully some of these issues have been clarified thanks to The Environment Agency.

Alan Butterworth, the Environment Agency's fishery development manager explains that not all the channel will be open to angling as a lot of the land has been returned to its original owners. The stretch or water upstream from the A4 to the paper-mill is a no fishing zone. From the railway bridge at Taplow downstream to where the M4 crosses the channel has been retained by the EA but the fishing has been leased to Thames Valley AA. From the motorway to Lake End Road, no fishing is allowed as this area has been set aside as a conservation area. There are 5 disabled swims at Lake End Road but the fishing rights below these swims to where the A332 meets the motorway have been leased to the Bath Road Piscatorial Society. The rest of the channel has been returned to Eton College although they are expected to lease out the fishing in future.

After disappointing recent results, some anglers were hoping that the channel would be stocked to improve the fishing. However, Alan Butterworth explained that this would not be happening and that it will be naturally stocked with fish moving in and out of the main river. He hopes that the Jubilee Relief Channel will eventually become a major breeding area and supply the Thames with new stock.

Following the recent big fish catches on Temple which include two thirties, Bury Hill's old lake has suddenly burst into life producing a string of twenties over the last week topped by a new thirty which was caught by regular Dave King.

Choosing to fish peg 20 along the front bank, Dave decided to place one of his rods out towards the point of the island into about 4' of water. Fishing a size 8 barbless hook with a single Nash 15mmTangy Squid boilie with a stringer, Dave hooked his new PB at around 12.30pm and following a very hard fight with the fish making a number of long powerful runs, Dave finally managed to slip the net under the perfect 30lb 2oz mirror after 30 minutes.

The fish was weighed and witnessed by Rebecca de Vere. Pictures of this immaculate mirror will appear on our Bury Hill's Website news pages on Sunday 3rd April.
